Product Photography at Home. (Easy Way)

Product photography is not necessarily something that you’re into but do give it a try and maybe, just like me, you’ll end up doing it more often than you thought. (I even got a collaboration with the Swiss Watch Maker, Daniel Wellington, we’ll come to that later in this post.)My way of doing it is simple, I just look around and use whatever I can find in my room.

So, this post will be about shooting this product, The Corgeut Moon Phase Watch.

These are the following steps that I will be following throughout this process.

1- Identify the eye-catching features of the product.

2- Look around you for things that can be useful for this project.

3- Use your tripod, imagination and try different test shots with the product to get your lights, focus right & SHOOT!!

This is my first try back in April 2016. As you read below, you will see how things changed with practice.

1- Identify the eye-catching features of the product.

What you want to do in this step is to locate what is the main eye-catching feature of your product. In my case, it was the rotating mini dial at the lower bottom that shows the movement of in the watch.

2- Look around you for things that can be useful for this project.

Looking around myself to find shiny objects that can be used in the background, a spotlight to aim the light and focus at the centre of the watch.

In my case, I had a table that I made for my A-Level Coursework and it had a glass top and LED lights on it. Then I found my fairy light, a glass prism, a Solar Jar that can be used as spotlight and a world map that use to give that vintage dramatic effect.

3- Use your tripod, imagination and try different test shots with the product to get your lights, focus right & SHOOT!!

Setup your camera on a tripod and try putting the product in different positions and using different light angles with the spotlight. First I tried the map, fairy lights and Solar Jar. Below is the result of it.

Shot on Canon 80D + Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 @ ISO250 , 50mm , f/2.8 , 1/50sec

(That was the first trial because I needed to practice before shooting for a brand.)

Then I decided to shoot without using the map and instead I used my table with LED lights, solar jar spotlight & and the result was DOPE AF!

Shot on Canon 80D + EF 50mm F/1.8 @ ISO200 , 50mm , f/1.8 , 1/100sec

At this point, everything turned out to be great then I tried adding the prism to the list of props to used and things got a little bit better.

Shot on Canon 80D + EF 50mm F/1.8 @ ISO200 , 50mm , f/1.8 , 1/125sec

After trying for this watch, came the day for me to shoot a watch for a collaboration with @danielwellington and I did some similar shots as above BUT I also improvised to create some other photos with whatever I had with me, rainwater and a sunset. Check them below!!

Shot on Canon 80D + Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 @ ISO640 , 50mm , f/2.8 , 1/160sec

Now, take a look at those that I’ve improvised!

(Sorry for the low quality, but you get the idea behind it)

My advice to you would be, try! Try anything with everything that you have around you and you shall pass!!

SHARE IF YOU FIND IT HELPFUL
